With 48 hours, you have to be selective. The mistake most two-day visitors make is trying to see every village, every beach, every winery, and every sunset spot. The result is a blur of bus rides and rushed photo stops. The better approach: focus on two or three big experiences per day and let the rest happen naturally.

This itinerary assumes you're staying in or near Fira, which is the most practical base for a short visit -- central, well-connected by bus, and on the caldera with views.

Day 1: The Caldera Walk and Oia

Morning: Fira to Oia Hike

Start early. The 10 km trail from Fira to Oia along the caldera rim is the single best thing you can do on Santorini, and it's free. Leave by 07:30 in summer (08:30 in spring or autumn) to avoid the worst of the heat.

The route: - Fira to Firostefani (15 min) -- Paved caldera walkway. Pass the famous blue-domed church. - Firostefani to Imerovigli (20 min) -- Still paved. Imerovigli is the highest point on the caldera. Optional detour to Skaros Rock (add 30-45 min). - Imerovigli to Oia (2-3 hours) -- Dirt trail, some steep sections. No shade. Bring 1.5-2 litres of water.

You'll arrive in Oia mid-morning to midday. Reward yourself with a cold drink at a cafe.

Afternoon: Oia

Spend the afternoon exploring Oia at a pace that doesn't feel like a forced march:

  • Walk the main street through the village
  • Find the Paraportiani-style blue domes (there are several vantage points)
  • Walk down to Ammoudi Bay (300 steps down from the village) for lunch -- the seafood tavernas right on the water are some of the best on the island
  • Browse the galleries and shops (Oia's are better quality than Fira's tourist shops)

Evening: Sunset

Oia's sunset is the headline event. The castle ruins at the northern tip of the village are the classic spot, but they fill up 60-90 minutes before sunset in summer.

Alternatives to the crowded castle: - The windmill area (less packed) - The path just past the castle heading towards Ammoudi - One of the caldera-view bars (claim a seat and order drinks -- you'll pay for the view but you'll have a seat)

After sunset, catch the bus back to Fira (25 minutes, runs until late in summer). Or have dinner in Oia and take a late bus or taxi.

Day 2: Caldera Cruise or Akrotiri + Beach

You have two strong options for Day 2. Choose based on your interests.

Option A: Caldera Cruise

A 5-hour catamaran or boat cruise around the caldera is the most popular Day 2 activity. Most cruises include:

  • Sailing past the caldera cliffs
  • A stop at the volcano (Nea Kameni) -- optional hike to the crater
  • Swimming at the hot springs (Palea Kameni)
  • A beach stop (often Red Beach or White Beach, seen from the water)
  • Lunch or dinner on board (BBQ, seafood, wine)

Cruises depart from Vlychada Marina or Ammoudi Bay, typically around 10:00-11:00 for day cruises or 14:30-15:30 for sunset cruises. Semi-private catamaran cruises run around 120-150 EUR per person.

If you take a day cruise, you'll be back by mid-afternoon with time for a rest, a walk through Fira's shops, and dinner.

Option B: Akrotiri + Beach

If you'd rather stay on land:

Morning: Akrotiri Archaeological Site

Take the bus from Fira to Akrotiri (20 minutes). The Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption around 1600 BC is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Allow 1-1.5 hours. Entry is around 15 EUR.

If you've been to Pompeii, Akrotiri is older and in some ways better preserved. The frescoes, the multi-storey buildings, and the drainage system show a civilisation far more advanced than its age suggests.

Late Morning: Red Beach

Red Beach is a 10-minute walk from Akrotiri. The access path has rockfall risk (check current conditions), but even the view from the clifftop is worth the short walk. If the path is open, the beach itself -- red volcanic cliffs, dark sand, blue water -- is striking.

Afternoon: Black Sand Beach

Take the bus to Perissa or Kamari for the afternoon. Both are black-sand beaches with sunbeds, tavernas, and warm Aegean water. Perissa is longer and quieter; Kamari is more organised with better restaurants. Pick one, swim, eat lunch, and relax.

Evening: Wine Tasting or Dinner in Fira

If you have the energy, stop at a winery on your way back to Fira -- Estate Argyros, Santo Wines, or Venetsanos all offer tastings in the late afternoon. Alternatively, head back to Fira for dinner. The side streets behind the caldera walkway have good tavernas at lower prices than the view-restaurants on the rim.

What Should You Know Before Going?

  • Stay in Fira for a two-day visit. It's the bus hub, it's central, and it has its own caldera views. Oia is beautiful but less practical as a base for getting around.
  • Start Day 1 early. The hike is the day's centrepiece and it's much better in cooler morning hours.
  • Book the caldera cruise in advance if you choose Option A. Popular operators sell out days ahead in summer.
  • Comfortable shoes matter. Between the hike, Oia's stone streets, and Ammoudi Bay's 300 steps, your feet will cover serious ground.
  • Two days is not enough for the beaches and the caldera. Accept that you'll miss things. The villages of Pyrgos, Emporio, and Megalochori are wonderful but require a third day. The south coast beaches deserve a full afternoon. If you have a third day, add them.
  • The KTEL Santorini bus costs 2.50 EUR and covers all the routes you need. Don't rent a car for two days -- parking will waste your limited time.

Two days covers the Fira-to-Oia hike, Oia's sunset, and either a caldera cruise or Akrotiri + a beach. Stay in Fira for the best transport connections. Start early on Day 1. Book any cruises in advance.
