A long black-sand beach backed by sculpted white cliffs that look like they belong on another planet -- Vlychada is the most visually dramatic beach on Santorini and one of the quietest, hidden on the south coast away from the tourist circuits.
In this guide
Vlychada (also spelled Vlichada) sits about 13 km south of Fira, on the island's south coast near the marina that serves as the departure point for most caldera cruises. The beach itself stretches along the base of towering white volcanic cliffs that have been carved into smooth, otherworldly shapes by wind and rain. The effect is genuinely strange -- like a moonscape meeting the sea.
The beach is far less crowded than Perissa or Kamari. It doesn't have the resort infrastructure of those beaches, which is both the drawback and the appeal. If you want beach bars and water sports, go to Perissa. If you want dramatic scenery and relative solitude, come here.
How Do You Get to Vlychada?
| Transport | Details |
|---|---|
| By car or ATV | About 13 km from Fira, roughly 20-25 minutes' drive. Take the road towards Akrotiri and follow signs to Vlychada. Limited parking near the beach. |
| By bus | Bus service to Vlychada exists but is infrequent. Check the KTEL Santorini timetable -- don't rely on regular service. |
| By taxi | About 20-25 EUR from Fira. |
| By boat | Vlychada Marina is right next to the beach. If you're on a caldera cruise departing from here, you can arrive early and spend time on the beach before boarding. |
There's no direct bus route that runs frequently to Vlychada, so a car, ATV, or taxi is the practical option for most visitors.
What Is the Beach Like?

The beach is a long strip of dark volcanic sand at the foot of the white cliffs. The contrast between the black sand, white rock, and blue water is extraordinary -- especially in the late afternoon when the sun lights up the cliff face.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Beach type | Black volcanic sand |
| Length | Several hundred metres |
| Cliffs | White sculpted volcanic formations rising directly behind the beach |
| Facilities | Sunbeds and umbrellas available in the main section, a small cafe/canteen |
| Water | Clear, calm in most conditions |
| Crowds | Much quieter than Perissa or Kamari. Even in August, you can find space. |
| Nudist section | Beyond the organised sunbed area, the beach becomes clothing-optional. Discreet and respectful atmosphere. |
The sand is less fine than Perissa -- more gritty and volcanic. Water shoes help for walking on the beach, though the seabed is sandy once you're in.
The cliffs at Vlychada are the real attraction. They've been shaped by volcanic eruptions and millennia of erosion into smooth, rippled formations that look sculpted by hand. Photographing them in the golden hour -- when the low sun catches every contour -- is one of the best things I did on Santorini.
What Can You Do?

Beach and Swimming
The main activity. The water is clean and clear. The beach is long enough that you can walk away from the handful of sunbeds and find a section entirely to yourself. Bring your own shade if you plan to be away from the organised section.
Photography
This is a photographer's beach. The cliff formations provide an endless variety of shapes and textures, and the light changes throughout the day. Early morning and late afternoon are best. The beach faces south, so you get good light in both directions.
Vlychada Marina
The small marina next to the beach is where most caldera cruises depart. It's not a tourist attraction in itself, but the area around it has a couple of restaurants with sea views. The marina area has a slightly different atmosphere from the beach -- more functional, with boat-related activity.
Nearby Attractions
Vlychada is close to several other south-coast attractions: - Akrotiri archaeological site -- about 5 km west - Red Beach -- about 7 km west - Akrotiri Lighthouse -- about 6 km west
You can combine Vlychada with any of these for a half-day or full day in the south of the island.
What Should You Know Before Going?
- Bring your own supplies. The beach has a small canteen but options are limited. Pack water, snacks, and sun protection.
- The cliffs are fragile. Don't climb on them or throw rocks. The volcanic rock erodes easily and the formations are irreplaceable.
- Limited parking. Arrive before 11:00 in summer to secure a spot near the beach.
- No bus service to speak of. You need your own transport.
- The nudist section is at the far end of the beach, past the sunbeds. It's well-established and no one will bother you regardless of which section you're in.
- The beach is exposed to south winds. On windy days, the sand can blow and the sea gets choppy. Check conditions, especially during the Meltemi season.
- Sunrise views are possible if you're staying nearby -- the beach faces south-southeast and catches the early light on the cliffs.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Late afternoon is the best time of day for the cliff light and cooler temperatures.
June and September for comfortable beach days without extreme heat.
July-August are hot but the beach remains less crowded than the east coast beaches. Bring plenty of water.
May and October are good for photography and walking, less so for extended swimming.
Vlychada is 13 km south of Fira, about 20 minutes by car. Free beach with limited facilities. The white volcanic cliffs are the most dramatic natural feature on any Santorini beach.
