Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera rim, about 2 km north of Fira on the walking path towards Oia. It has the same whitewashed architecture and caldera views as Oia, but without the cruise ship crowds, the souvenir shops, or the sunset scrum. The village is home to Skaros Rock -- a dramatic volcanic headland with the ruins of a medieval fortress -- and some of the best accommodation on the island. It's where people who know Santorini choose to stay.
In this guide
Imerovigli is often called the "Balcony to the Aegean," which is the kind of phrase that usually makes me suspicious. In this case, it's accurate. The village is perched at the caldera's highest elevation, giving it unobstructed views down the cliff face to the sea and across to the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. The panorama is wider and more dramatic than from Fira, and the village itself is quieter and more authentically Cycladic.
How Do You Get There?
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Distance from Fira | About 2 km |
| Walking time from Fira | 20-30 minutes along the caldera path |
| Bus | Regular service on the Fira-Oia route |
| Taxi | 5 minutes from Fira |
| Location on the caldera | Between Fira and Oia, highest point |
The caldera path between Fira and Oia passes directly through Imerovigli. If you're walking the Fira-to-Oia hike (about 10 km total), Imerovigli is the first village you reach after leaving Fira. You can also bus or taxi directly.
What Can You See?

Skaros Rock
The defining landmark of Imerovigli. Skaros is a volcanic promontory that juts out from the caldera edge like a pointing finger. On top of it are the ruins of a medieval Venetian fortress (Kastro) that was once the capital of the island.
The walk to Skaros: - About 20 minutes from the village centre to the chapel of Theoskepasti at the base of the rock - Allow 45-60 minutes each way if you want to climb to the top of Skaros itself - A well-marked path descends from the caldera rim to the rock - The path is steep in places and exposed -- wear proper shoes and bring water - At the base of the rock, you can visit the small chapel of Theoskepasti, carved into the cliff - The views from the top of Skaros are the best panoramic views on Santorini -- 360 degrees, with the entire caldera visible
The walk to Skaros is the single best short hike on Santorini. Twenty minutes gets you to the chapel of Theoskepasti; push on further to the top of the rock itself (45-60 minutes) and you're standing on a volcanic headland with the caldera curving away on both sides and the sea 300 metres below. Go early morning or late afternoon -- midday sun on the exposed rock is brutal.
The Village Itself
Imerovigli is small -- really just a stretch of the caldera path with hotels, a few restaurants, and a handful of churches. That's the appeal. There's no commercial centre, no souvenir shops, no crowds. Just whitewashed buildings, blue domes, and the caldera view.
Highlights:
- Anastasi Church -- One of the most photographed blue-domed churches on Santorini, with the caldera as a backdrop
- The caldera path -- The stretch through Imerovigli is the most scenic section of the Fira-to-Oia walk
- Sunset views -- Imerovigli faces west, giving direct sunset views without the Oia crowds. Watch from your hotel terrace or find a spot on the path.
The Caldera Walk: Fira Through Imerovigli
If you're walking from Fira towards Oia, Imerovigli is the natural stopping point for a shorter walk:
| Section | Distance | Time | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fira to Imerovigli | 2 km | 20-30 min | Easy, paved path |
| Imerovigli to Skaros Rock (chapel) | 500 m | 20 min | Moderate, steep descent (45-60 min to the top) |
| Imerovigli to Oia (continuing) | 8 km | 2.5-3 hours | Moderate, some rough sections |
The Fira-to-Imerovigli section is the easiest and most scenic part of the caldera walk. It's flat, paved, and the views are constant. If you don't want to do the full Fira-to-Oia hike, walk to Imerovigli, explore Skaros, and bus back.
Where to Eat
Imerovigli has a handful of restaurants, all with caldera views:
- Tavernas serving Greek standards (salads, grilled meat, fresh fish) at prices slightly lower than Oia
- A couple of more upmarket dining options attached to the luxury hotels
- For budget eating, grab supplies from a minimarket or eat in Fira (20 minutes' walk)
The restaurants here are quieter and less touristy than Fira or Oia. You can usually get a table without a reservation, even in summer.
Is Imerovigli Worth Staying In?

Many experienced Santorini visitors consider Imerovigli the best base on the island. Here's why:
| Imerovigli | Fira | Oia | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caldera views | Best (highest point) | Good | Good |
| Crowds | Very low | High | Very high |
| Restaurants | Few but good | Many | Many |
| Nightlife | None | Yes | Some |
| Shopping | Almost none | Good | Good |
| Sunset | Excellent (private) | Good | Famous but crowded |
| Transport | Bus and path to Fira | Hub | End of bus route |
| Price | Premium hotels | Range | Premium |
The trade-off: Imerovigli is quiet. If you want nightlife, shopping, and restaurant variety, stay in Fira. If you want the caldera view without the crowds and don't mind walking 20 minutes to Fira for dinner, Imerovigli is superior.
When Should You Visit?
As a day walk from Fira: Any time of year the weather is good. Morning is best for photography (light on the caldera) and avoiding the heat.
For sunset: The western exposure means direct sunset views. Without Oia's crowds, you can watch from a restaurant terrace or a quiet spot on the path.
May-June and September-October: The caldera path is most pleasant in shoulder season when temperatures are comfortable for walking.
July-August: Doable but hot. Walk early morning or late afternoon. The midday heat on the exposed path and Skaros Rock is intense.
What Should You Know?
- Skaros Rock requires proper shoes. The path down is steep and rocky. Flip-flops will end badly.
- Bring water. There are very few shops in Imerovigli. Carry at least 500ml, more if walking to Skaros.
- The caldera path is free. No tickets, no gates, no opening hours.
- Pushchairs don't work on the Skaros path. The village path is fine, but the descent to the rock is too steep and narrow.
- Accommodation books up early. The caldera-view hotels in Imerovigli are some of the most sought-after on the island. Book months ahead for summer.
- It's walkable from Fira. You don't need a bus, a taxi, or a car. Twenty minutes on a scenic path.
Imerovigli is 2 km north of Fira on the caldera path. Highest point on the rim. Skaros Rock (medieval fortress ruins, 20 minutes to the chapel, 45-60 minutes to the top) has the best panoramic views on the island. Quiet, uncrowded alternative to Oia. Walk from Fira in 20-30 minutes.
