Caldera Walks and Hikes

The Fira to Oia Hike

The signature Santorini experience. Walk 10 km along the caldera rim from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, with continuous views of the caldera, the volcanic islands, and the Aegean. Allow 3-5 hours. Free, no tickets. Start early to beat the heat.

Imerovigli and Skaros Rock

If the full Fira-to-Oia walk is too long, walk just the first section to Imerovigli (2 km, 30 minutes from Fira) and descend to Skaros Rock -- a volcanic promontory with medieval fortress ruins and the best 360-degree panorama on the island.

Boat Trips

Caldera Cruise

The classic Santorini boat trip takes you to Nea Kameni (the active volcanic island) for a crater hike, then to Palea Kameni for the hot springs, and usually includes a stop at Thirassia island. Half-day tours run 3-5 hours and cost 30-50 EUR. The quintessential first-time visitor experience.

Sunset Cruise

Smaller boats, catamaran cruises, or luxury yachts sail the caldera as the sun sets. Prices range from 40 EUR (shared catamaran) to 100+ EUR (premium options). Most include drinks and a meal. The sunset from the water, with the caldera cliffs lit up in orange and gold, is arguably better than the view from Oia.

Check which ferries are running and book at Ferryscanner.

Kayaking

Paddle along the south coast or around the caldera. Tours run 3-5 hours, cost 95-160 EUR, and include a guide, equipment, and swimming stops. No experience needed.

Volcanic Sites

Nea Kameni Volcano Hike

Walk to the crater of the active volcano in the centre of the caldera. The hike takes about 30 minutes up, with views of fumaroles and volcanic rock. Usually combined with a caldera cruise.

Hot Springs at Palea Kameni

Swim in warm, sulphur-tinted water near the volcanic island. The springs are lukewarm rather than hot, and the experience is more about the novelty than the temperature. Part of most caldera cruises.

Ancient Sites

Akrotiri

A Bronze Age Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption around 1600 BC -- the Greek Pompeii, but 1,500 years older. Covered excavation site with multi-storey buildings, frescoes (copies), and drainage systems. Entry about 12 EUR. Bus from Fira, 30 minutes.

Ancient Thera

The ruins of a Hellenistic and Roman city on the ridge of Mesa Vouno, between Kamari and Perissa. Smaller and less famous than Akrotiri, but the mountain-top setting with views over both coasts is spectacular. Entry about 6 EUR. Access by road from Kamari or on foot from Perissa.

Villages

Santorini's inland villages are the antidote to the caldera crowds. Pyrgos has the best-preserved medieval centre. Megalochori has canava wine caves. Emporio has a fortified kastro. All are free, uncrowded, and accessible by bus or car.

Wine and Food

Santorini's volcanic soil produces distinctive wines -- Assyrtiko is the star white grape. Santo Wines near Pyrgos has the most famous caldera-view tasting terrace. Food tours walk you through Fira's hidden tavernas for fava, tomatokeftedes, and local cheese. Cooking classes teach you to make Santorini dishes with island ingredients.

Beaches

Santorini's beaches are volcanic: black sand (Perissa, Kamari, Perivolos), red sand (Red Beach), and white pebble (White Beach). The sand gets scorching hot in summer -- water shoes are essential. Perissa is the best all-rounder. Kamari is the most organised. Red Beach is the most dramatic. Vlychada has the most otherworldly landscape.

Island Hopping

Santorini has excellent ferry connections to the Cyclades. The closest and easiest day trips:

  • Thirassia -- The small island across the caldera. 20 minutes by boat. Quiet, one village, tavernas with caldera views.
  • Ios -- 35-60 minutes. Famous for parties and beautiful beaches.
  • Naxos -- 1.5-2 hours by fast ferry. The biggest Cycladic island, great beaches, the Portara.
  • Paros -- 2-3 hours. Beautiful villages, Ekatontapiliani church, Naoussa harbour.
  • Folegandros -- 40 minutes to 3 hours. Dramatic cliff-top Hora.
  • Anafi -- 1 hour 15 minutes. Remote, empty beaches, authentic.
  • Mykonos -- 2-2.5 hours. The cosmopolitan party island. Ambitious but possible.
  • Crete -- 2 hours by fast ferry. Knossos, Heraklion, Cretan food.
