Santorini gets over 10 hours of sunshine per day from May through September, daytime temperatures range from 22C to 30C+, and the sea is swimmable from June through October. That's a wide window. The real question isn't "when is the weather good?" (answer: six months of the year) but "when do the crowds, prices, and heat align with what you actually want?"

Month by Month

January-February

Temperature: 10-14C. Sea: Too cold to swim. Crowds: Almost none.

Santorini in winter is quiet, mild, and very different. Many hotels, restaurants, and tourist businesses are closed. The caldera views are still there, the hike from Fira to Oia is still open, and the villages are eerily beautiful when empty. But options for dining and activities are limited, and ferry schedules are reduced.

Best for: Budget travellers who don't need beaches, photographers who want the island to themselves, anyone who finds the idea of empty Oia appealing.

March

Temperature: 12-16C. Sea: Cold. Crowds: Very light.

Spring is arriving but hasn't fully committed. Wildflowers start appearing on the volcanic landscape. Some tourist businesses begin reopening toward the end of the month. Still quiet and cheap.

April

Temperature: 15-20C. Sea: Cool but swimmable for the brave. Crowds: Light to moderate.

The season is starting. Most hotels and restaurants reopen. The weather is warm enough for hiking and sightseeing, though not reliably for beach days. This is one of the best months for photography -- clear skies, good light, wildflowers, and no crowds blocking your shots.

Best for: Hikers, photographers, couples who want the caldera without the masses.

May

Temperature: 19-24C. Sea: Warming up (18-20C). Crowds: Moderate.

The sweet spot for many visitors. Warm enough for everything, cool enough that the Fira-to-Oia hike doesn't feel like survival training. Beaches are pleasant. Prices are lower than summer. Ferry schedules are full. Everything is open.

Best for: The best all-round month. Good weather, manageable crowds, reasonable prices.

June

Temperature: 24-28C. Sea: Comfortable (21-23C). Crowds: Getting busy.

Summer has arrived. Beach weather is reliable, the sea is warm, and the days are long. Crowds are building but haven't peaked. Prices are rising. This is the last month before peak-season intensity.

Best for: Beach lovers who want warm water without August's crowds.

July

Temperature: 26-30C. Sea: Warm (23-25C). Crowds: Peak.

Full summer. The Meltemi wind picks up, which keeps temperatures from being unbearable but can cancel ferries and make sea conditions rough. Every hotel is booked, every restaurant is full, and the sunset spot in Oia has standing room only. The Fira-to-Oia hike should only be attempted at dawn.

Best for: Peak-season energy, guaranteed beach weather, warmest sea temperatures.

August

Temperature: 27-31C. Sea: Warmest (24-26C). Crowds: Maximum.

The most expensive, most crowded, and hottest month. Oia at sunset is shoulder-to-shoulder. Restaurants require reservations days in advance. The Meltemi is at its strongest. Cruise ship days bring thousands of additional visitors.

If you can only travel in August, Santorini is still beautiful. But manage your expectations about crowds and prices.

Best for: Those who want the full high-season experience and book months ahead.

September

Temperature: 24-28C. Sea: Still warm (23-25C). Crowds: Dropping.

The consensus best month. The sea is still warm from summer, the air temperature is comfortable, the crowds thin noticeably after the first week, and prices begin dropping. Late September is particularly good -- warm, quiet, and atmospheric.

Best for: The best balance of weather, swimming, crowds, and price. If you can choose one month, choose this one.

October

Temperature: 19-23C. Sea: Cooling (21-22C). Crowds: Light.

Autumn on Santorini. Still warm enough for beaches in early October. The light is golden and the sunsets are dramatic. Some businesses start closing toward the end of the month. Ferry schedules begin thinning.

Best for: Quiet exploration, photography, hiking, couples.

November

Temperature: 15-19C. Sea: Cool. Crowds: Minimal.

The season is winding down. Some rain is possible. Many tourist businesses close. Prices drop significantly. The island takes on a quieter, more local character.

December

Temperature: 12-15C. Sea: Cold. Crowds: Virtually none.

Similar to January-February. Cheap, quiet, limited options. Christmas on the caldera has a certain appeal if you're the type who enjoys empty beauty.

What About the Wind?

The Meltemi is the strong northerly wind that blows across the Cyclades from mid-June through September, peaking in July-August. It's the reason Santorini doesn't feel as suffocating as 30C+ would suggest, but it also:

  • Cancels or delays ferries (especially to smaller islands)
  • Makes the caldera's west-facing terraces breezy to unpleasant
  • Creates choppy sea conditions on exposed beaches
  • Makes the Fira-to-Oia hike feel exposed in the Imerovigli-Oia section

The Meltemi is a factor, not a dealbreaker. But if you're planning island-hopping by ferry, build flexibility into your schedule.

How Long Should You Stay?

Most sources recommend 4-5 days for a comprehensive Santorini experience. That gives you time for: - The Fira to Oia hike (1 day) - Beach days (1-2 days) - A caldera cruise or volcano visit (half day) - Akrotiri and a winery (half day) - Exploring villages at your own pace (1 day)

Three days is enough for the highlights. A week is enough to slow down and enjoy it.

Booking Timing

  • Peak season (July-August): Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead. Popular restaurants need reservations.
  • Shoulder season (May-June, September-October): Book 1-2 months ahead for good selection. Walk-in availability is usually fine for restaurants.
  • Off-season (November-April): Book a few days ahead. Many places are closed, but those that are open have availability.

Late September is the best all-round time to visit Santorini -- warm sea, comfortable temperatures, thinning crowds, and dropping prices. May is the runner-up. July-August are hottest and most crowded. The island is pleasant from April through October.
