One day on Santorini means choosing. You can't see the caldera villages, the archaeological site at Akrotiri, a beach, a winery, and the Oia sunset. Not in a single day. So this itinerary focuses on the things that make Santorini unique: the caldera views, the whitewashed villages, and the sunset. Everything else is a bonus.

The Itinerary

Morning: Fira and the Caldera (08:00-12:00)

08:00 -- Start in Fira

Fira is the capital and the transport hub. If you're arriving by ferry, you'll dock at Athinios port (25 minutes by bus to Fira). If you're on a cruise ship, tenders bring you to the Old Port below Fira -- take the cable car up (10 EUR, 3 minutes) or walk the 588 steps.

Begin at the caldera edge in Fira. Walk north along the caldera path for immediate views down the cliff face to the sea, the volcanic islands in the centre of the caldera, and the villages of Imerovigli and Oia in the distance.

08:30 -- Walk to Firostefani (15 minutes)

The caldera path continues north from Fira to Firostefani, the next village. This is where you'll find some of the most photographed blue-domed churches on the island, with the caldera behind them. The walk is flat, paved, and scenic.

09:00 -- Continue to Imerovigli (15 minutes more)

From Firostefani, keep walking north to Imerovigli -- the highest point on the caldera rim. If time allows, descend the path to Skaros Rock (20 minutes to the chapel, 45-60 minutes to the top) for the best panoramic view on the island. If not, the view from the Imerovigli path is already stunning.

10:00 -- Return to Fira

Walk back to Fira along the same caldera path. Stop for coffee at a caldera-view cafe.

10:30 -- Explore Fira

Browse the main shopping street, visit the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral (free, beautiful interior), and if you're interested in archaeology, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera has finds from Akrotiri (10 EUR, 30 minutes).

Midday: Choose Your Activity (12:00-15:00)

You have three options for the middle of the day. Pick one.

Option A: Winery Visit

Santorini's volcanic soil produces distinctive wines -- Assyrtiko is the star. A winery visit takes 1-2 hours and gives you a taste of the island beyond the views.

  • Santo Wines -- The most famous, with a caldera-view terrace. Tasting from about 10-15 EUR for 4 wines. Near Pyrgos village, 15 minutes from Fira by bus or taxi.
  • Book in advance in summer.

Option B: Beach Stop

Grab the bus from Fira to Kamari (20 minutes, 2.50 EUR) or Perissa (30 minutes, 2.50 EUR). Swim in the Aegean, walk on black volcanic sand, have a taverna lunch on the beach. You'll have about 2 hours, which is enough for a swim and a meal.

Option C: Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The Bronze Age city buried by the volcanic eruption. Like Pompeii, but older. Bus from Fira (30 minutes). Entry about 12 EUR. Allow 1-1.5 hours. One of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean.

Afternoon: Travel to Oia (15:00-17:00)

15:00 -- KTEL Santorini bus from Fira to Oia (25 minutes, 2.50 EUR)

Buses leave from Fira's central bus station and run frequently. Alternatively, a taxi takes about 20 minutes.

15:30 -- Explore Oia

Walk the narrow marble-paved lanes. The village is a maze of white and blue buildings, cave houses, art galleries, and boutiques. Key spots:

  • The main walkway along the caldera edge -- Continuous views. Walk the full length.
  • The blue domes -- The most photographed spot in Greece. Look for the three blue domes visible from the path near the centre of the village.
  • Ammoudi Bay -- If you have energy and time, descend the 300 steps to the tiny harbour below Oia. Swimming off the rocks, waterfront fish tavernas. The walk back up is the price.

16:30 -- Lunch / late lunch in Oia

Eat at a taverna with a caldera view. Prices are higher in Oia than Fira, but this is your one day. Try fava (the yellow split pea puree), tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters), and grilled octopus. Budget 20-35 EUR per person.

Evening: The Oia Sunset (17:30-19:30)

The Oia sunset is one of the most famous natural spectacles in Europe. The sun drops into the Aegean directly ahead, the sky turns orange and pink, and the white buildings glow. When it's over, the crowd applauds.

Where to watch:

  • The castle (Kastro) -- The most famous spot. Arrive at least 60-90 minutes before sunset in summer to claim a position. It gets extremely crowded.
  • The caldera path -- Walk away from the castle towards the south end of Oia. Less crowded, same sun.
  • A restaurant terrace -- Book a table with a sunset view. More expensive, but you get a seat, a drink, and no standing-room-only stress.

After sunset: The bus back to Fira runs until late evening. Check the last departure time before you settle in. Alternatively, have dinner in Oia after the crowds thin out.

From a Cruise Ship

You have 6-8 hours typically. The tender brings you to the Old Port below Fira. Take the cable car up (10 EUR) -- the donkey ride is a tourist trap and the animals are mistreated. Follow the itinerary but skip the beach/Akrotiri option to ensure you're back at the port on time. Budget extra time for the cable car queue on return.

Day Trip from Mykonos or Crete

You'll arrive and depart by ferry at Athinios port. The bus to Fira takes 25 minutes (crowded, chaotic). Follow the full itinerary. Make sure you know your return ferry time and get to Athinios early -- the port is chaotic.

Overnight with Early Departure

If you arrived the night before and leave midday, reverse the itinerary: start with Oia at sunrise (virtually empty, magical light), then work south to Fira by midday.

What to Skip on One Day

A window with a view of the caldera in Fira, Santorini, Greece.
A window with a view of the caldera in Fira, Santorini, Greece.
  • The full Fira-to-Oia hike (10 km, 3-5 hours) -- consumes too much of your limited time
  • Boat trips around the caldera -- typically 3-5 hours, not compatible with a one-day schedule
  • Both Akrotiri AND a beach -- pick one or neither
  • Pyrgos village -- Worth visiting on a longer stay, but not essential on one day

What Should You Know?

  • Start early. The more ground you cover before 11:00, the less you fight crowds and heat.
  • The caldera path from Fira to Imerovigli is flat and easy. Don't be intimidated -- it's a paved walkway, not a mountain hike.
  • The Oia sunset position matters. Arrive 60-90 minutes early for the castle. Or skip the crowd and watch from anywhere along the caldera path -- the sun is the same everywhere.
  • Buses are cheap and reliable. 2.50 EUR to most destinations from Fira.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk 8-15 km depending on your choices. Cobblestones, steps, and paths.
  • Bring sunscreen and water. There's limited shade on the caldera path.
  • An overnight stay is genuinely better. If you can manage it, one night lets you see the sunrise (empty, peaceful) and the sunset (famous) -- and gives you time for Akrotiri, a beach, and a winery.

One day in Santorini: morning caldera walk from Fira to Imerovigli, midday winery or beach or Akrotiri, afternoon in Oia, sunset at the castle. Bus from Fira (2.50 EUR). Budget 50-100 EUR. Start early, claim your sunset spot early.
