The Santorini sunset is the island's signature experience, and watching it from the water solves all the problems of the land-based version: no crowds, no jostling, no scramble for position. You get an unobstructed view of the sun dropping behind the caldera rim while the cliffs of Oia and Fira glow above you.

Sunset cruises are the most popular boat trip on Santorini, and the competition between operators has pushed the quality up. A typical cruise includes swimming stops, volcanic beaches, the hot springs, unlimited drinks, and a BBQ dinner -- all timed so the final stretch coincides with the sunset.

Detail Info
Duration About 5 hours
Departure time 14:30-15:30 (timed so sunset falls near the end of the cruise)

What's included BBQ or Greek dinner, unlimited wine/beer/soft drinks, swimming stops, hot springs visit, snorkelling gear
Group size Semi-private (10-14 guests) or private charter

Most operators include hotel pickup and drop-off. You'll be collected from your hotel 30-60 minutes before departure and driven to the marina.

Where Do They Depart From?

  • Vlychada Marina -- The main departure point for most cruises. South coast.
  • Ammoudi Bay (Oia) -- Some operators depart from below Oia, which is atmospheric but involves descending 300 steps.
  • Fira Old Port -- A few smaller operators use the port below Fira.

If your tour includes hotel transfers (most do), you don't need to worry about getting to the port yourself.

What Happens on the Cruise?

A typical sunset cruise itinerary:

15:00-15:30 -- Board at Vlychada. Welcome drink as the catamaran heads out.

16:00 -- First swimming stop near Red Beach or White Beach. The boat anchors offshore and you jump in. Snorkelling gear is provided. The volcanic rock formations underwater are worth exploring.

17:00 -- Sail towards the hot springs near Palea Kameni. Some cruises include a swim here (warm, sulphur-tinted water -- wear dark swimwear).

17:30 -- BBQ or Greek dinner is served on deck. Typical menu: grilled fish or chicken, salad, bread, local mezedes. Unlimited Santorinian wine, beer, and soft drinks flow from this point.

19:00-19:30 -- The boat positions itself in the caldera, facing west. The sun begins its descent. This is the moment you came for.

20:00 -- Sun disappears. The crew starts the return journey. You arrive back at the marina around 20:30-21:00.

I've done the Oia castle sunset and the catamaran sunset. The catamaran wins easily. You're not crammed in with 500 people, you have a drink in your hand, and the entire caldera is your viewing platform. The 120 EUR is money well spent.

What Types of Cruise Are Available?

10-14 guests on a modern catamaran. Good balance of price, experience, and intimacy. This is what most people book and it's the best value.

Private Charter

Just you (and your group) on the boat. You control the itinerary, the music, and the pace. Prices start around 500-800 EUR for the whole boat. Worth it for a proposal, anniversary, or group of friends splitting the cost.

Large Group Cruise

30-50 guests on a bigger boat. Cheaper (80-100 EUR) but less personal. The food and service tend to be more basic. You're one face in a crowd rather than part of a small group.

Sailing Yacht

A traditional sailing vessel instead of a catamaran. More romantic, slower, and often smaller (6-10 guests). Slightly more expensive but a more authentic sailing experience.

How Does This Compare to the Caldera Day Cruise?

A serene sunset over the caldera in Santorini, Greece, with a boat cruising by.

The sunset cruise and the caldera day cruise overlap in content -- both sail around the caldera, visit beaches, and include food. The main differences:

Sunset Cruise Day Cruise
Duration ~5 hours 5-10 hours
Main attraction The sunset The volcano hike + hot springs
Timing Afternoon to evening Morning to afternoon/evening
Meal Dinner on deck at sunset BBQ lunch
Best for Couples, romance Families, sightseeing

If you only do one boat trip, the sunset cruise is the more memorable experience for couples. The day cruise is better if you want to hike the volcano and have a more activity-focused day.

What Should You Know Before Booking?

  • Book 3-7 days ahead in summer. The best semi-private cruises sell out quickly in July-August. Last-minute availability is possible but risky.
  • Bring a light jacket or shawl. The temperature drops once the sun sets and you're on the water.
  • Swimwear goes on under your clothes. You'll change between swimming and dinner without much privacy on a catamaran.
  • Dark swimwear for the hot springs. Sulphur stains light fabric permanently.
  • Waterproof phone case. Between the swimming and the sea spray, your phone needs protection.
  • Seasickness: The caldera is relatively sheltered, but if you're prone to motion sickness, take medication before boarding. Catamarans are more stable than monohull yachts.
  • The food is good, not gourmet. BBQ on a boat deck has logistical constraints. Expect generous portions of simple, well-cooked Greek food. The wine is local and decent.
  • Free cancellation is standard on most booking platforms if you book through Viator or GetYourGuide.

When Is the Best Time to Go?

June and September -- Long daylight hours, warm evenings, fewer tourists competing for bookings.

July-August -- The sunset is beautiful but the cruises are at peak capacity and price. Book well in advance.

May and October -- Cooler evenings (bring layers), but the light is gorgeous and prices are lower.

The sunset time changes with the season. In June, the sun sets around 20:30. In September, around 19:30. Cruises adjust their departure times accordingly.

Sunset cruises run about 5 hours, departing around 15:00. Prices from 120 EUR per person including dinner, drinks, and swimming stops. Semi-private catamarans are the best value.
