Perivolos is technically a continuation of Perissa beach on Santorini's southeast coast, though the two are treated as separate stretches. Where Perissa has a more laid-back resort character, Perivolos is livelier -- beach clubs with music, cocktail bars, water sports, and a generally younger, more energetic crowd. The beach itself is excellent: fine black volcanic sand (softer than most Santorini beaches), clear water with a stone-free seabed, and relatively calm conditions thanks to its sheltered position.

The 5 km stretch means there's room for everyone. Walk north towards Perissa for a quieter spot; stay in the Perivolos centre for the action.

How Do You Get to Perivolos?

Transport Details
By bus KTEL Santorini buses run from Fira to Perissa, then it's a 5-minute walk south along the beach to reach the Perivolos section. Some buses stop directly at Perivolos -- check the timetable.
By car or ATV About 12-14 km from Fira, 20 minutes' drive. Parking is available along the beach road, though it fills up in peak season.
By taxi About 20-25 EUR from Fira.

Perivolos is also close to Emporio village (about 2.5 km) and within easy reach of Vlychada Marina and the south coast attractions.

Perivolos has the best sand on Santorini, in my opinion. It's actually soft enough to walk on comfortably -- unlike the grittier, hotter sand at Kamari or the pebbles at Red Beach. The water is clear and stone-free. If you want a proper beach day, this is it.

Beach Clubs

Perivolos has several beach clubs that run from morning sunbed sessions through to evening cocktails. The format is familiar: order drinks and food from your sunbed, and the staff bring everything to you. Some clubs include towels, water, and snacks in their sunbed package.

The beach clubs are the main draw for the under-35 crowd. Music gets louder as the day goes on.

Water Sports

Jet skis, paddleboarding, banana boats, and inflatable rides are available from operators along the beach. Conditions are good for water sports -- the water is calm and the wind is typically light on this stretch.

Go-Kart Track

There's a go-kart track near the beach -- one of the few such facilities on Santorini. Fun for families or anyone who wants a break from sunbathing.

Restaurants and Bars

The beach road has a string of tavernas, restaurants, and bars. Quality ranges from standard tourist fare to genuinely good seafood. For a special meal, Istoria Hotel (considered the best beach resort on Perivolos) has a restaurant that's worth the splurge.

Walking to Perissa

The beach is continuous, so you can walk from Perivolos to Perissa along the waterline. It's a pleasant 20-30 minute stroll. The character changes as you walk north -- less party, more family.

What Should You Know Before Going?

  • The black sand gets hot. Same as every Santorini beach -- water shoes or sandals for the walk to the water. Especially between 11:00 and 16:00 in summer.
  • Beach club sunbeds aren't free. But some offer good-value packages (sunbed + cocktails + snacks for a set price). Shop around.
  • Perivolos is busier and louder than Perissa. If you want quiet, walk north towards Perissa or south towards the less-developed end.
  • Parking fills up in summer. Arrive before 10:00 or use the bus.
  • The beach faces east, so morning sun hits it directly. By late afternoon, you're in the shadow of the hills behind. Plan accordingly.
  • Good value compared to the caldera villages. Restaurants and accommodation are cheaper here than in Fira or Oia.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

June-September for the full beach club experience. The scene is liveliest in July-August.

May and October are pleasant for swimming but some beach clubs may not be fully operational.

September is the sweet spot -- warm water, fewer crowds, lower prices.

Perivolos is about 13 km south of Fira, 20 minutes by car. Santorini's longest beach (5 km), with fine black sand, clear water, and the island's best beach club scene.
