Monolithos sits on Santorini's eastern coast, between the airport and Kamari. It's a long, flat stretch of fine black volcanic sand with shallow water that stays knee-deep for a long way out -- ideal for small children. The beach has proper facilities (sunbeds, tavernas, a children's playground, even basketball and football courts) but lacks the glamour and crowds of the south-coast beaches.

This is a local beach as much as a tourist one. Santorini families bring their children here because the water is calm and shallow. Visitors staying near the airport sometimes discover it on their last day. It deserves to be better known.

How Do You Get to Monolithos?

Transport Details
By car or ATV About 5-6 km from Fira, 10-15 minutes' drive. Ample free parking right at the beach -- one of the few Santorini beaches where parking is easy.
By bus Buses run from Fira to Monolithos, though only about twice daily according to some reports. Check the KTEL Santorini timetable. Not the most reliable route.
By taxi About 10-15 EUR from Fira. Very cheap from the airport (about 5 EUR).
From the airport Just 2 km, about 4 minutes by car. Useful if you have a few hours before a flight.

Monolithos is also about 5 km from Kamari, so you can easily visit both beaches in a day.

What Is the Beach Like?

The shallow water is the standout feature. You can walk out 20-30 metres and still be at waist height. The seabed is sandy and gentle with no sudden drop-offs. For families with toddlers and young children, this is by far the safest beach on the island.

If I had young kids and was choosing a beach on Santorini, Monolithos would be the automatic choice. The shallow water, the playground, the parking right there -- it's designed for families in a way that the more famous beaches simply aren't.

What Can You Do?

Swimming and Paddling

The main activity, especially for families. The shallow, calm water is ideal for young swimmers and paddlers. Adults who want deeper water will need to walk further out.

Children's Activities

The playground near the beach is a bonus for families. Basketball and football courts provide an alternative to the water. Some tavernas have shaded seating areas where parents can watch kids play.

Beachfront Dining

Several tavernas and cafes line the beach, offering standard Greek fare (grilled fish, salad, souvlaki). Prices are lower than the tourist-heavy beaches further south.

Airport Layover Beach

If you have a few hours before a flight, Monolithos is the closest beach to the airport. A quick swim and a meal, then a 5-minute taxi to check-in. Much better than sitting in the departure lounge.

What Should You Know Before Going?

  • Ample free parking is the big practical advantage. No hunting for spots, no inflated parking fees.
  • The bus service is limited. Don't rely on it. Rent a car, take a taxi, or arrange hotel transport.
  • Some visitors report occasional smells from nearby port/industrial activity (oil tankers pass offshore). This is intermittent and weather-dependent, not a constant issue.
  • The beach faces east, so it gets morning sun and is in the lee of the island's hills for afternoon winds. Less exposed to the Meltemi than west-facing beaches.
  • It's not a "scene" beach. No DJs, no cocktail lounges, no influencer photo spots. That's the point.
  • Sunbed prices are lower than at Kamari or Perivolos. Around 15 EUR per person for a sunbed and umbrella.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

June-September for swimming. The shallow water warms up quickly.

Any time if you have small children and want a safe, calm beach experience.

Late August-September for the warmest water and manageable crowds.

Monolithos is about 6 km east of Fira, 10 minutes by car. Just 2 km from the airport. Shallow, calm water with free parking and family-friendly facilities.
